Sea Trout Handling Guidance
Whilst sea trout are a hardy species when it comes to their migration and overcoming obstacles to reach their spawning grounds, they do not tolerate being out of the water or handled for any length of time. This is particularly true in warm conditions. Based on contributions from the committee and sr sea trout permit holders, please read and adhere to the following guidance when handling sea trout.
-
Where possible sea trout should be unhooked in the net without leaving the water prior to return
-
Where that is not possible unhooking and return should take place as quickly as possible, ideally under a minute especially if conditions are warm
-
On returning the fish ensure it has suitably recovered. Ensure the fish is upright and give support until it is ready to swim away
-
Weighing and photographing fish especially taking selfies should be the exception rather than the norm
-
In warm conditions please forego weighing and photography
-
Anglers are asked to use their judgment during the summer. Please postpone trips where:
-
Air temperature has consistently been above 21 - 22 degrees centigrade and high pressure is dominant, particularly when night time conditions are also hot.
-
Water temp is over 20 degrees.
-
We do of course have a Sea Trout Catches page. The balance of providing these pictures was carefully considered and deemed appropriate to show prospective and current permit holders what is achievable on OAPS waters. All the anglers photographed have fish welfare as a priority and would have considered the above.
Thank you for your consideration
